2007 Sue was invited in November to Penang to encourage the development of training in Creative Arts Therapies, (under the instigation of Alex Chew, a Mallay Chinese dramatherapist who lives in the UK). Day One was a conference for 70 people including police officers, psychologists, teachers, play therapists, social workers, parents and creative arts workers. Sue presented the theory and practice of Creative Arts Therapies and its core ‘Neuro-Dramatic-Play’. Conference participants fully participated in practical exercises that illustrated the NDP and EPR approach.

Day two was a training workshop for 30 professional in movement, mandalas, puppet and mask work within the context of therapeutic storytelling. Sue had meetings with representatives of teaching and academic organisations who hope to support the development of more training initiatives.

Sue was also invited by the National Autistic Society of Malaysia (NASOM) to run an intensive training course for 30 teachers of autistic children in Kuala Lumpur. The participants were new to movement, modelling, puppet and story work tho’ their involvement and laughter is apparent in the pictures.

The second day Sue worked with some of the students with a group of young adults with autism. She demonstrated that relaxation and calm movement is possible and that people with autism are able to contribute to puppet and story work.

Sue finished her Malaysian trip with a visit with Andy (her elder son) to the Temiars in the rain forest where she had carried out her original research. Her main aim was to visit her elderly and frail ‘adopted’ mother who taught her traditional midwifery 25 years ago! Minono is still alive although nearly blind and very frail. Sue and Andy also visited all the friends and adopted relatives including babies that Sue had helped deliver, who now have children of their own.

There will be an illustrated report of this trip and the rapid social and geographical changes that are affecting the Temiars in due course.

Sue is returning to Malaysia from 17 August – 7 September 2008, she will continue the training programme and spend more time with the Temiars.
